Luxury vinyl plank, or LVP, has quietly become one of the most requested floors we carry, and for good reason. It is waterproof, it is tough, and today's printing makes it look convincingly like wood or stone. But it is not the right answer for every room, so let us walk through it honestly.

What LVP does well

• Waterproof: spills, splashes, and the occasional pet accident wipe right up, which is why it works in kitchens, baths, and laundry rooms.
• Hard-wearing: the wear layer shrugs off scratches from claws, chairs, and toys.
• Comfortable and quiet: it is softer and warmer underfoot than tile, and it takes the echo out of a room.
• Easy to live with: a broom and a damp mop are usually all it needs.

Where it falls short

LVP is a synthetic product, so it will not refinish like real hardwood, and it will not add resale value the way solid wood can. Very heavy furniture can dent a softer wear layer, and cheaper products can look flat, so the quality of the plank really matters here.

When you compare LVP, look past the price tag at two numbers: the thickness of the wear layer and the overall plank thickness.
