Most people spend hours choosing a color and about ten seconds choosing a sheen. That is backwards. The color sets the mood, but the sheen decides how washable the wall is, how much it hides flaws, and how it catches the light. Get the sheen right and the color looks its best.
The sheens, from flat to shiny
Flat and matte
The least reflective finish. It hides bumps, patches, and roller marks better than anything else, which makes it great for ceilings and low-traffic walls. The trade-off is that it is harder to scrub, so it is not the pick for a mudroom.
Eggshell and satin
The workhorses. They carry a soft glow, wipe clean, and still hide minor wall flaws. For most living rooms, bedrooms, and hallways, this is where we point people first.
Semi-gloss and gloss
The tough, wipeable finishes. They stand up to moisture and scrubbing, which is why they belong on trim, doors, cabinets, and in bathrooms. The shinier the finish, the more it shows every dent and brush stroke, so surface prep matters here.
A room-by-room cheat sheet
- Ceilings: flat, every time.
- Bedrooms and living rooms: eggshell or satin.
- Kitchens and baths: satin or semi-gloss so you can wipe splashes.
- Trim, doors, and cabinets: semi-gloss or a cabinet enamel.
- Kids' rooms and hallways: satin for the extra scrub-ability.
If a wall has a lot of patches or texture, drop down a sheen. The flatter the finish, the more it forgives.
Bring in a chip, a fabric, or a photo
Once you have the sheen sorted, color is the fun part. Bring in a paint chip, a pillow, a cabinet door, or even a phone photo and we will match it and get you the right finish for the room. Stop by our store in Bolivar or call 417-326-7644.
